about

In the Fall of 2016 I was asked to play at my friend Jamey Gray's art gallery show closing in Gastonia, NC. That is the town I grew up in, that is the town I moved away from. But I've been fortunate to hang on to a few incredible friends from there.

I played for two hours that night, and the lion's share was improvised. I played at a tiny tiny fraction of the volume I usually play at, through a small Orange amplifier. So many things about this night were different than my usual set. I recorded the sounds into a portable Zoom recorder, and didn't listen to them til Fall of 2017.

All but one of the pieces (Beehive Improv) come from absolute zero. These improvs are my response to the room, the friends, the family, the art, the town.

The cover art is taken from Jamey Gray's work "Summer Meadow Winter Meadow"
